Increasing Cybersecurity Compliance Requirements and ISA / IEC 62443

Whether your organisation needs to comply with NIS2 requirements or the UK’s NIS Regulations and Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF) in the UK, effective risk management of IT and OT networks is critical. There are a range of standards, frameworks and guidelines that organisations can use, including the ISA / IEC 62443 Standards. When implemented correctly, the 62443 standards help to effectively manage cyber security risk through the use of Security Zones and implementation of controls based on risk and Security Levels.

It's important to conduct risk and security assessments, followed by mitigation plans to enhance industrial control system (ICS) security. This will help to narrow down the cybersecurity problem to a list of findings, which only represent a part of the overall ICS security posture. Adopting various security controls, such as prevention, monitoring, detection, and response to incidents is also crucial. The ICS should be segmented into security zones based on the identified cybersecurity requirements and protection levels.

Challenges

PLANT WORKER AND COMMUNITY SAFETY

Malicious cyber-physical actions can result in safety risks.

PRODUCTION DOWNTIME

An attack disrupting production can impact revenue, including distribution channels and supply chains.

EXPANDING ATTACK SURFACE

The attack surface for cyber-physical assets exposes production equipment to disruption from attack.

MEETING COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS

Penalties for noncompliance are high but diminished brand reputation caused by a breach may be worse.

MAINTAINING PRODUCT INTEGRITY

Degrading product quality due to a cyberattack can ruin a brand's reputation or create spoilage.

Case Studies

We had a legacy switching network with an outdated Wi-Fi overlay and an added security layer that was no longer adequate to protect our assets. What we needed was something more stable and scalable, with security integrated at its core.”
- Miguel Borges, IT Director, Galucho
Within a dynamic cloud-first architecture such as ours, the key is to have an intelligent, responsive security infrastructure. … the Fortinet Security Fabric solution, with its integrated event correlation, automation, and centralized management and reporting, was the perfect fit for us.”
- Salvatore Lanzilotti, Global Network & TELCO Services Manager, Prysmian Group
FortiManager is praised by all our administrators; they can manage all the deployed solutions we have, and this makes their work a lot easier, simplifies control, and reduces the error rate.”
- Marek Timoracký, IT Manager, ENVIEN Group

Effective ICS Cybersecurity: Using the IEC 62443 Standard »

IEC 62443 is a set of Industrial Control System (ICS) security standards written by ICS experts for ICS owners, manufacturers and integrators across a range of applications and sectors. Evaluating assigned security levels within identified security zones and conduits against functional and system requirements provides a cohesive approach to security. Fortinet teamed with the SANS Institute to review the standard and the needs from technology that support implementation. With guidance from IEC 62443 and implementation of Fortinet’s solutions, you can address the security of an ICS strategically.
